DIY Tech Corner

Why do my headlights dim when the bass hits?

  • this is a strong symptom of VOLTAGE DROP

  • caused by the electrical systems inability to provide large amounts of current on-demand when the bass hits

What can I do about it?

  • Big 3 Upgrade!  You need to re-wire your vehicles charging system using the same AWG power wire as the system is using:

    • alternator to battery +

    • chassis to battery -

    • block to chassis

  • Upgraded battery!  Often an older stock type battery will NOT be up to the task.  You'd be surprised how much of an effect this can have!  Consider an Optima Yellowtop or other fast recharge, deep cycle battery.

  • Upgraded alternator!  Sometimes installing a monster sound system with only a puny 40A alternator just won't work.  Consider having your alternator serviced or finding a larger one for your application.

Most customers find that just after the Big 3 alone their voltage drop has substantially improved.  Adding a Yellowtop after that is almost always enough.
